Sassy girls. Swoony boys. What could go wrong?
I had been waiting a long time to read this one. So I was really excited to finally crack the spine yesterday. At first, I totally sank into it. I found myself completely immersed in the City and Alif's life. But as the story progressed, I found that all the elements that I'd really been excited about - the mysticism, the religion, the activism, the digital technology - none of it came together for me in a way I'd been hoping for. Instead, I found myself bogged down by the story of Alif on the run.
Well written, absolutely. Evocative, definitely. Just didn't meet my admittedly high expectations for it in the end.
